Hirsoshima Remembered
Yesterday was the 59th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, which admittedly hastened the end of World War II. This first weapon of mass destruction killed thousands at 8:03 a.m. when it exploded (many of whom were literally vaporized) and additional thousands from the effects of the radiation over a number of years. Shortly after I was consecrated Bishop, Nancy and I travelled to our then Companion Diocese of Tokyo and spent a week visiting congregations and ministries in the Tokyo area. Then on our own, we went to other areas in Japan; one of the most meaningful, and certainly the most moving, was spending a day in Hiroshima.

 Taize Service – August 9
Taize Prayers and Meditations: August 9, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. (meditation through songs, prayers and silence) in the candlelit south transept of the church. The theme of this time of meditation through songs, prayers and silence is “A Little Peace and Quiet”.

Centering Prayer- August 16
We who practice Centering Prayer at the Church of the Redeemer invite you to join us in the chapel on Saturday, August 16from 9:30 AM to 12 noon for a meditation experience of God. The morning will consist of three 30-minute sittings of Centering Prayer separated by walking meditations, a video, and appropriate breaks. We sit in mindfulness-in conscious awareness-and consent to the Presence and Action of God within, letting go of our personal agendas and our small selves.
We invite all who are interested-beginners and experienced practitioners of any tradition-to join us as we make this mini-journey. Centering Prayer guidelines for beginners will be available. Also, we advise beginners to stay only as long as you are comfortable. If you need to leave after the first meditation sitting, you are welcome to do so-quietly, of course!

 York Road Partnership
Join Bishop Ihloff for a breakfast meeting with the York Road Partnership on Friday, August 15 at 9:00 a.m., 5210 York Road. Bishop Ihloff would like an interested parishioner to accompany him to this meeting to explore the outreach possibilities that may exist in our own “backyard.” The York Road Partnership is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake to discuss mutual interests, opportunities and initiatives toward the revitalization

 School Supplies Needed for Govans Elementary
Please purchase school supplies to help the children at our partner school, Govans Elementary School. This year we will concentrate on only three items: Composition Books, Dry Erase Marker Pens, and #2 Wooden Pencils. Our goal is to donate 300 Composition Books, 300 Dry Erase Marker Pens, and 3,000 #2 Wooden Pencils. Please place your donations in the Govans School box at the head of the stairs at the main entryway to the Parish Hall.

Education for Ministry (EfM)
Interested in digging deeper into the Christian faith, studying the Bible, Church history and theological ideas and reflecting on connecting faith with life experiences?
Consider joining the Education for Ministry program (EfM) developed and administered by the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee) and supported by the Diocese of Maryland. For complete program details see Sewanee’s EfM website.
We are a small EfM group of 6-12 people meeting at The Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, on Wednesday evenings 7:00-9:30 from September through May, with lively discussion and a snack. The seminar discussions focus on the issues found in our lessons. There are no exams and no educational prerequisites, just reading, reflection, conversation, and worship. All textbooks and reading materials are included in the $350 annual tuition. CEU credits and need-based scholarships are available. We have openings for new members. Please consider joining us.

Want to go solar?
Join the Baltimore Interfaith
This summer, caring homeowners from Baltimore congregations are coming together to form a solar purchasing group. If you’ve ever wanted to go solar at home, now is your chance to do so in good company! Join by August 15th to participate in the process of putting out the RFP to solar companies.
How does the co-op work?
Based on the same principle as buying in bulk, the group will go through the process of purchasing home solar systems together. Guided by the Community Power Network, which has successfully organized several such co-ops previously, the group will select a single contractor to install systems on all of the homes. Each participant will own their system and will sign their own contract with the chosen installer, but everyone will get the group discount.
By going solar as a group, participants will save up to 30% off the cost of a solar electricity system, and will have the support of the co-op throughout the process instead of having to go it alone. This buying group is being sponsored by Interfaith Power & Light and welcomes any Baltimore homeowner to participate.

made to Interfaith Power & Light, which helps congregations across the
region respond to climate change, and to New Vision Renewable Energy,
which helps Appalachian communities impacted by coal mining to shift
to solar power.

Characters We Meet In John’s Gospel
August Bible Study– on Mondays, 10-11:30 a.m.
Bishop Ihloff will lead as we take an in depth look at four rather unusual characters in John’s Gospel, three of whom are found nowhere else in Scripture. Even John the Baptist, the only one featured in the Synoptic Gospels, is portrayed in unique ways in John. Each of these “characters” is truly a “character” yet each bears witness in special ways to Jesus as Lord and Son of God. Please bring your own Bible so we can compare different translations (some Bibles will be on hand for anyone who forgets).
