Thematic Units & Social Studies

Our Mission in Action

Thematic Study and Social Studies contribute to children’s understanding of themselves, the community in which they live, and the larger world around them. Our studies allow students to learn more about their community as well as other ethnicities and customs, exploring similarities and differences through experiential learning, literature, crafts, and cooking.

Curriculum

Themes become more complex as the children grow and develop. Learning about the seasons and holidays, community helpers and the city in which we live, eventually evolves into learning about more abstract concepts like outer space, the time of the dinosaurs, and caring for our environment. Redeemer offers both in-house programs and field trips to further enhance thematic units of study. Field Trips & In-house Programs

21st century learning takes us outside the classroom walls and into the real world. Our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and pre-first classes take several field trips throughout the year and our younger children engage in many in-house programs. A sample of field trips include: Towson University Planetarium, Paper Bag Players at Goucher College and The Maryland Zoo. A sample of in-house programs include: the Quiver Farm Egg Project, Maryland Science Center Traveling Dinosaur Exhibit, Yoga for Children, as well as a visit from our local fire station.

Geography & World Cultures

A geography and world cultures weekly enrichment class is part of our kindergarten and pre-first curriculum. Students have an opportunity to learn more about the people and the world around them through literature, crafts, games, and cooking.

INTEGRATED CURRICULUM

Project Highlight: Pre-kindergarten Goes Under the Sea

Stasia Owens, Pre-kindergarten Teacher

The pre-kindergarten unit, “Under the Sea”, is a fun and educational way to introduce and explore marine life and ocean environments in the classroom. Students learn all about the exciting world that exists beneath the ocean. From reading books with ocean themes like “Commotion in the Ocean,” to counting and sorting ocean themed items like sea shells, starfish, and different kinds of sea creatures, teachers incorporate all things “Under the Sea” into the daily curriculum. Children engage in several weekly sea related explorations, art and science projects, and ocean fact finding missions.

Parents are invited to a final classroom presentation where they are wowed by the colorful under sea world their children have created. Each of the four pre-k classrooms come alive with different ocean exploration stations including sensory tables filled with sea creatures, a sand bin to dig for seashell letters, a fishing for numbers math game, an “all about shells” science table, and many other fun and engaging activities. Our vibrant and immersive under-the-sea environment helps foster curiosity and excitement about the ocean while supporting early learning and development.
