STEM & Outdoor Learning

Our Mission In Action

Curiosity, exploration, experimentation, and flexible thinking are the primary goals of the Day School’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and outdoor learning curriculum. Through organized and informal classes in science and math, ample time playing and building with a variety of materials and manipulatives, the use of electronic whiteboards and a multi-sensory outdoor space; students are provided with abundant opportunity for discovery using their five senses. They create, manipulate, and journey to places beyond the classroom walls. We are fortunate to have an acre of playground space that includes a rain garden, climbing equipment, outdoor classroom area, and vegetable and herb gardens. Our environment promotes spontaneity and inquisitiveness within our students.

STEM

Science

Students engage in scientific explorations on a daily basis. Whether through casual outdoor discoveries or teacher-directed activities, our program emphasizes wonder, curiosity, observation and experimentation. Students attend science/enrichment classes weekly, stretching imagination and creative thinking through inquiry and experimentation.

Technology

Technology, a tool used to enhance our curriculum, helps us journey to places unreachable within the classroom walls. Our kindergarten and pre-first classes have interactive whiteboards, promoting collaboration and individualized learning.

Engineering

Manipulating and playing with blocks, Legos, play dough, and a variety of materials found indoors and out; powers ingenuity and collaboration. The opportunity for free play and open-ended exploration are encouraged daily, inspiring our next generation of engineers.

Math

Everyday activity and routine provide the backbone for early math literacy. We emphasize exploration, flexible thinking and creative problem solving. As children grow and develop, exposure to mathematical concepts becomes more complex, and students apply gained knowledge and skills to solve more challenging problems. We use The University of Chicago’s Everyday Mathematics program as the foundation for our math curriculum.

OUTDOOR EXPLORATION

With our bountiful rain garden, vegetable and herb gardens, an outdoor classroom, a musical garden, an 8 acre campus and students with an abundance of natural curiosity, Redeemer is the perfect place to explore through outdoor learning. Our offerings provide an on-going opportunity for hands-on exploration and observation through the study of local and natural habitats and species, stimulating students’ wonder.
